I can’t meditate.
This thing all the spiritual folk harp on about, sitting with yourself, breathing, silencing the mind (attempting to), believe me when I say, it’s everything it’s cracked up to be.
I hear time and time again ‘I can’t meditate’. Honestly, that statement doesn’t make sense.
You can meditate and here’s why…
Meditation is simply taking the time, demonstrating to yourself, to your spirit, that you’re putting some time aside for it. 5 mins. 20 mins. An hour. Whatever. More than anything it is simply the intention of putting time aside for YOU.
Sitting with yourself. Being quiet. Yes, the end ultimate goal (if you will) is to silence the mind, but the mind is a stubborn beast. Don’t make this your goal of meditation. You’re setting yourself up for failure.
There are meditations where you focus on the breath. There are meditations which are guided. Ones with mantras. Ones where you walk. Mindfulness techniques.
There are tonnes. Don’t let this overwhelm you. Just start with one and see how you go. And if it doesn’t work try another one.
For me, guided meditations overwhelm me. When I’m asked to imagine a stream for instance, my thought processes take the following form…
What type of stream? Is it a mystical stream with fairies flying above? Is it a stream in the Australian bush? What about the woods of Canada, what about a stream over there?
For me I use a mantra. This is what I’ve found to work best for me. Or counting my breath. I meditate anywhere. On a train. In a park. On my bed. On the floor in my clinic. Anywhere. It’s a reset pick me up button like nothing else. Coffee I love. Meditation is better.
Meditation is life changing.
Life changing.
Changes life.
As Gabby Bernstein says, ‘If you’ve got 10 minutes to feel like shit, you’ve got ten minutes to meditate’. Stick that in your pipe.
