“How” to find your passion.
A good friend said to me recently ‘you should write an ebook or run a workshop on finding your passion.’ To which I replied ‘Nup. I very much dislike the topic’. Which must seem ridiculous seeing I’m a life coach. But it’s true.
For some reason the idea of ‘finding your passion’ sees me putting this enormous pressure on myself to intuitively know what someone’s passion ‘should’ be. That somehow I ‘should’ be able to tell them the answer.
And then I remember, it’s got nothing to do with me (thank you ego) and I remember a few core truths about finding your passion.
Here they are:
1. Live all areas of your life with passion. This idea of ‘finding’ your passion puts a shit load of pressure on an expectation, an outcome. Would you agree? Where as all of life needs to be lived with passion. Right? When we’re so focused on what we’re ‘meant’ to be doing with our life we tend to lose focus on the whole of life.
The solution: live all of life with passion. Where can you bring more passion to your relationship? Your friendships? Your hobbies? Your spirituality? Get my drift?
When we’re in that vibration of passion we open ourselves up to inspiration. The passion has a way of finding us. Open up and allow it in.
2. Tune in and ask. ‘What would you have do with me?’ I believe this question is what led me to where I am today.
4 years ago I was sitting in a cafe in Luang Prabang feeling very sorry for myself. I was journalling away, sitting with my decision of not pursuing a career in life coaching. And I pleaded with the Universe ‘What’s my talent? What do you want to do with me?’ And the response was ‘You’re good at listening to people’. And I thought, ‘Yep brilliant. That really helps’. Which it totally didn’t. And so I dropped the thinking and searching. Truly. I just got on with life. I was over thinking about it. I got a corporate job and started going through the motions of life.
But I had asked.
I. Had. Asked.
3. Be prepared to hear the call AND follow through. So like I said, I had asked. And the insight didn’t come through for another 8 months.
For me, my insight came through in a yoga class. There I was, lying in savasana and I get this intense thought ‘you have to study kinesiology’. Up to this point I had never considered studying it. It was all science and totally out of my league. And to study again for 3 years. And don’t get me started on the money it would cost.
But when the message came through it was so strong it made me sit upright. I knew I had to follow through. And I did.
It was scary and totally foreign. But I’ve never looked back. Never.
Be open to the call coming through. It may come through like a lightening bolt awareness.
It might be more subtle though…
In a dream. As a daydream. As an impulse to have a conversation with someone.
You might overhear a conversation about something and notice all the hairs on your arm stand up. Your gut flip. In a good way.
While you’re wasting time online, an advert might stand out. You might stumble across someone’s blog.
Ask yourself, What do I talk about to my friends? What discussions, topics, ideas light me up?
And now for the key ingredient : FOLLOW THROUGH.
Enrol in the course.
Contact the people.
Make that call.
SHOW UP. It will support you. It will back you. It will lead you. And by IT, you know I mean the Universe. It’s co-creation people. CO-CREATION. You don’t need to have ALL the answers. In fact you need have very little.
Get out of the way and enjoy the ride. Just be willing to show up. And follow through.
4. Get your ducks in a row. Danielle LaPorte posted a great blog not long ago on exactly this.
In it she speaks of getting your ducks in a row. If you want that interstate promotion, make sure you can leave your life at a moment’s notice. Get your life admin sorted.
If you want that committed relationship, make sure you’re committing to all the areas of your life. Demonstrate to the universe that you’re in the commitment zone.
If you want more abundance in your life, tidy up your finances.
Get your ducks in a row, so the passion that’s waiting to find you can sweep you off your feet at a moments notice.
And if the thought of finding your passion sends you into a fit of anxiety – THIS WILL HELP!
