Grief. How To Help Yourself & Someone Else.
Grief. Loss. Rejection. Painful experiences. They come in many forms and at many times throughout our life.
This post is for those, who are experiencing a sadness or loss so palpable they don’t know what to do with it, and don’t know how to ask for help.
And it’s for those who have a friend, partner or loved one going through something tough. Cause it can be really hard, to know how to support them.
I’ve actually been sitting on this post for a while. It hadn’t quite come together, until I came across the following video by Megan Devine. I invite you to watch it. You might need it now, or some time in the future. Either way, it will have a lasting affect.
When someone is deep in their loss – of any kind – you need do a couple of (quite simple) things.
Acknowledge their pain. Let their pain exist.
Us humans, we’re fixers. We like solutions. We revel in the happy times. And often, we want to get straight back to them.
When you or someone you love is in deep suffering though, this is the worst thing you can do for them.
When we attempt to fix, advise, and move someone out of their pain – we inevitably trigger reactions of… defensiveness, misunderstanding and lack of support.
As the video so beautifully suggests, saying to someone, ‘I’m sorry that’s happening. Want to tell me about it?’, will immediately give their grief a voice, which is really all grief is asking for.
When you’re in grief – it’s bullsh!t. You hate it. It’s debilitating. It hurts. It isolates. It breaks you. You fear it’ll never leave you.
And then… as life has it… it does start to eventually move and shift and change form (as everything does). It brings with it new wisdoms. New strength. Perspective. A softness and lightness even.
But, before it gets to this point… the grief needs to be honoured. Or rather, the soul does.
I love the quote she shares by Parker Palmer.
“The human soul doesn’t want to be advised or fixed or saved. It simply wants to be witnessed, exactly as it is”.
It simply wants to be witnessed.
Make sure you do this for yourself too. If you’re going through something tough, whatever that version of tough is – allow yourself to be witnessed.
This awareness reminded me of why therapy sessions – of any kind – are so important and so necessary in life. They provide a safe place where the soul can be witnessed, and celebrated. No matter where it’s at.
Two ways I can support you – not to fix or take away your grief, rather to honour and give it a voice.
A Kinesiology Session.
You’ll be heard. You’ll be held. Your grief, your pain, whatever your experience – will be acknowledged. Stuck energy will be shifted, you’ll leave feeling lighter.
